This month I did some work on the first pond I ever built for my grand-father. This is a very classic British hole in the ground using an internal pond filter.
Not wanting to strip the whole pond out left us with a clean and a little bit of an update. Safe to say it hadn’t been cleaned in a while! I managed to fill a whole compost bin with the waste material that came out of it. I also found 5 goldfish and a plethora of frogs.
To boost the filtration of the pond I changed the shallow end from a basic potted plant area to a gravel bed for a natural bio filter. This natural filtration method will make a massive difference to the pond. The pump near the bottom of the pond will bring the fish waste up and disperse it into the gravel, where the plants will absorb the nutrients. Always work with nature!
To bring the aesthetic to life I couldn’t help but add a custom whisky barrel fountain. This has given the pond a greater three dimensional view so the pond can be appreciated from afar. It also can also be enjoyed day and night with lights programmed to a light sensor, and of course it brings the soothing sound of babbling water!
Just needs a little more rock work to hide the rest of the liner!
